People of Colour - UGLY DUCKLING

We now trend hashtags like blm , person of colour, all lives matter. But how many of us know the history behind the terms used ? Why were people segregated as ‘whites and non whites’ ? Why were non whites referred to us  ‘coloured’ ? 

There were controversies on what’s the right way to address them. Though most of you all found calling someone black as racist, did you know how they felt about it ? Well, they say, initially they were okay with being referred as person of colour as it integrated many people and it was good for a unified effort towards certain revolutionary movements. But with the buzz that is going around now, they clarify that not everyone, not all people had fought the same fight. Not everyone had the same struggle and that the scale of accomplishments differed and also that they pride being called black given the wars they had faced in the past. 

Having said this , let’s talk about us, let’s get down to the roots of us. The following narration is based on events that I have witnessed happening to my dear ones. People from the place I live act mature and broad minded.However, they will show you two faces. And a few would not even bother to go under disguise. Most families , most people here prefer a fair woman and a fair man. Once such family’s story is what I will be elucidating here. 

If you were born in a family which had people of mixed colours, considered yourself fortunate. Do you remember the story, ‘UGLY DUCKLING ‘ ? It was referred ugly simply because it didn’t match the colour of other members of family. Yes, you will be considered the ugly duckling of the family too if you were the only person to be deep coloured. We were taught wrong by our teachers, parents and society. 

Being an ugly duckling would contribute only a part of the humiliations you are about to face, if you are up to grow as an ‘ugly female duck’. 

Females ducks are supposed to be beautiful as the ones on fairness products commercials.  If it failed to be born that way it has to face its consequences. Yes, it was the the ugly female duck’s failure to born ‘ugly’ by definition. 

Our society framed something as ‘dowry’.. The uglier you are by definition, the more is the price you need to pay to get married to a white groom. But why did the female ugly duck prefer a white groom ? Because her family would rejoice a fair and beautiful duckling from her; because she could no longer tolerate the idiosyncrasies; because she thought may be beautiful ducking by their definition would bring her some peace; because she thought, at least her duckling wouldn’t have to face the criticisms that she has been facing all her life. 

YOU LOOK TOO DARK. YOUR SKIN IS OILY. YOU NEED TO DO SKIN CARE TO BE ACCEPTABLE. YOU NEED TO DO THIS. YOU NEED TO DO THAT. I PREFER WOMAN WITH DEEPER SKIN TONE. I LOVE YOUR DARK SKIN. DEEP DARK DUSKY DUCKLING. 

After all the drama she has gone through you would expect her to have a blessed life after marriage. But that’s not how it happens in reality. The society and you all who have a bio in your matrimonial sites as, “Prefer educated and fair woman from a decent family” are the dire reason for the SUFFERANCE OF THE DUCKLING. Please change your bios, really !
